I'm sad to say that my dad, Scott
Reekie passed away on January 28, 2019. He was 3 weeks
shy of his 93rd birthday. He was the author of this incredible
website that I hope you are enjoying. Dad led an amazing
life full of experiences most of us can only dream of. His
adventures started as he grewup in Earlsferry, Scotland and
continued as he immigrated to the United States as a young man
and settled there.
Everyone says they have the best dad,
but I really did. If you've been exploring his website and
have read the stories of his life, you know what I'm talking
about. He was a thinker and a do-er, an experimenter and
an inventor, a hiker and a dancer. He loved music!
Some of his favorite songs are linked below.
Dad taught me to never give up.
He lived by example and and proved that "keeping going" keeps you going. If
he saw a mountain, he wanted to climb it, and true to his
Scottish Heritage, if he saw a path, he needed to explore it.
His last hike was in September before his passing where he did a
four mile, 1,429 foot climb to the summit of Tumalo Mountain
(7,779 ft elevation). Dad was a role
model for me in so many ways. He kept his mind keen and
his body sound by continuing to pursue the things he loved.
Read his Octagon Theorem web
page, and look at his
Tumalo Mountain Summit on the Web page and you'll see what I mean!
I'm a retired teacher now, but my
dad was one of my best students. When dad was in his 80's
I asked him to write down some of his memories of life growing
up in Scotland. I made him some website template pages and
taught him how to use the website building software, Microsoft
Front Page. He endeavored on a new journey of chronicling
his life electronically. He learned how to format the pages, add
hyperlinks, insert photos and learned how to upload his changes
to the Internet. Did I mention he began this website in
his 80s? He worked on this website until he was almost 93.
He was a learner and a do-er!
I was privileged
to spend every Tuesday together with him for
the past four years. We did many things on these "special
Tuesdays" including tweaking his beloved web page, working on
fun odd jobs together, hiking, or working in my yard spending
hours raking every inch ever so slowly and carefully until is
was meticulously perfect. After outdoor adventures, we would
come in and for tea and biscuits followed by a few games of
checkers. He loved playing checkers and always got the
best of me on the day.
Until the end, Dad loved music and dancing.
As he passed, he listened to his cherished music and even had a
"last dance". I have accumulated some of his favorite songs that
are interspersed throughout his web site to make them easier to
find and enjoy. I encourage you to browse the site and
enjoy the highlights of his life, his Scottish Heritage and his
music!
